Your Favorite ‘Dance Moms’ Star Is Going To Jail

After filing for bankruptcy in 2010, it came to light that Abby hid $755,000 earned from her Lifetime show when listing her assets, according to Deadline. In total, she was indicted for 20 counts of bankruptcy fraud. Last June, Abby pled guilty to the charges that could slap her with a $5 million fine and up to five years in jail according to E! News, but her lawyers were pushing for probation without jail time since she’s a first-time offender.

Abby’s first sentencing hearing was held on January 20, and according to Deadline, the Assistant U.S. Attorney prosecuting the case rejected her claims that hiding the three-quarters of a million dollars in Dance Moms money was just a mistake, and only happened because she was overwhelmed by the success of the show. The U.S. Attorney urged the judge to consider jail time as he believed Abby “intended to cause harm” to her creditors by hiding the cash.

Abby was supposed to have a final sentencing hearing on February 24, but federal judge Joy Flowers Conti postponed the sentencing to May 8 to allow the Dance Moms star to take a trip to Mexico early next month for “business opportunities,” according to Deadline. According to the report, the trip doesn’t have anything to do with a next season of Dance Moms, which just wrapped its seventh season.

At the final hearing Monday, Abby was sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison, followed by two years of supervised release, People reports. Abby will also have to pay a $40,000 fine, in addition to the $120,000 judgement.
