11 Breakups That Nearly Broke Us

We’re not going to lie: The news that Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck are splitting after 10 years of marriage kind of devestated us. If they can’t make it last, who can? But they’re not the only superstar couple whose breakup caused us to almost stop believing in love. Here, 10 more relationships we wish would’ve lasted 4-eva:

1. Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt
They were literally one of the most beautiful couples to look at, and it rocked us to our core when they divorced in 2005 after five years of marriage. While Brad reportedly cheated on Jenn with Angeline Jolie, she seems pretty happy these days with her current fiancé, Justin Theroux.

2. Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield
Remember that month earlier this year when we were all pretty sure Hollywood’s most compatible couple had split? It’s okay if you don’t—we’ve blocked it out of our memories, too. Thankfully, they seem to be back on now, but those few weeks were enough to make us lose faith in true love.

3. Ross and Rachel from Friends
The iconic TV couple’s adorably perfect relationship lasted for approximately 10 seconds the first time around, before stress and jealousy caused them to go on their infamous “break.” Sure, they got back together in the end and presumably lived happily ever after, but that first split was a dark time for Friends fans everywhere.

4. Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling
Their chemistry in The Notebook was completely off the charts. That’s why it hurt so bad when their real-life relationship couldn’t stand the test of time—it fizzled out in 2008.

5. Tom and Summer from (500) Days of Summer
The overwhelming cuteness of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel will never ever make up for the fact that (500) Days of Summer doesn’t have a happy ending. We went to the movie theater for a quirky romcom, not a depressingly accurate portrayal of a doomed relationship.

6. Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake
We thought the two former Mickey Mouse Clubbers were destined to go down as childhood sweethearts. Needless to say, we we were heartbroken when they said “bye, bye, bye” to each other in the early 2000s.

7. Rick and Ilsa from Casablanca
The ending of Casablanca is pretty much guaranteed to leave mascara streaks on your face. When Humphrey Bogart forces Ingrid Bergman to get on the plane, saying she’ll regret staying with him (“Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon, and for the rest of your life.”), it takes everything we have not to throw pretzels at the TV. Ugh, the ’40s were a rough time.

8. Heidi Klum and Seal
After numerous vow renewal ceremonies, we were blown away when the couple of seven years called it quits in 2012. Like Ben and Jen, we truly believed they were Hollywood soulmates.

9. Carrie and Aidan from Sex the City
Aidan was the complete oppposite of Mr. Big and truly seemed to care about Carrie. We rooted for them when they got back together (after Carrie had cheated on Aidan previously with Mr. Big), but alas, true romance wasn’t in the cards.

10. Amy Poehler and Will Arnett
There are some things you can always be certain of in life, and we used to think Amy and Will’s marriage was one of them. But the funny pair divorced in 2014 after nine years of wedded bliss. Still, we’re holding out hope the two get back together. Hey, we can dream, right?
