Teeth are the new hair.

That’s if you believe every celebrity’s gleaming white smile on the red carpet, which is proof that if the ultimate Hollywood status symbol was once a bouncy blow dry, it is now a dazzling set of pearly white teeth.

But with professional whitening services costing upwards of several hundred dollars in most places, most people are looking for cheat ways to get white teeth for less.

Which is where the Californian make-up artist, Sadiya Slayy, comes in.

The popular blogger uploaded a video to her Instagram page on Friday, in which she whitens her teeth…with turmeric.

She then applies the bright orange mixture to her face and teeth and leaves it on her face for ten minutes, and her teeth for two.

Ms Slayy finally recommends washing your face and brushing your teeth thoroughly, which she claims serves to ‘lighten dark spots, prevent acne, and whiten teeth’.

A word of warning, however – the method might make your toothbrush turn yellow.

Turmeric has long been touted as the answer to all sorts of things.

As well as being good for the skin and helping with weight loss, many people have said that the ancient medicinal herb helps to remove plaque and whiten teeth.

The Star Wars British actress, Daisy Ridley, recently got herself into a bit of a mess when she attempted a turmeric facial, ending up looking overly yellow just a day before shooting.

But what does a dentist make of this new DIY teeth-whitening measure?

Dentist Michael Tam, from Sydney, is sceptical.

‘Turmeric has been used for thousands of years for medical, ceremonial and cooking purposes, but besides it being abrasive, I do not see a major benefit of using turmeric for teeth whitening,’ he says.

‘It is often used to alter the colour of other foods, clothes and your skin, and anything that is used for that can cause the opposite of whitening – in fact it can stain.

‘There is some research that turmeric has anti-bacterial properties, but having anti-bacterial properties will not white your teeth.

‘An easier (and less spicy!) way to whiten your teeth is to keep them clean via brushing, flossing and avoiding stained drinks and sugar,’ he says.

Looks like this one is one best left to the beauty bloggers then…
