Christmas isn’t a time for calorie counting, but even so, the number in your typical festive feast may just shock you.
The average Brit will eat a whopping 5,906 calories on Christmas Day alone, according to new research – that’s nearly three times the recommended daily allowance for a woman.
And it’s the equivalent of eating 12 Big Macs, 22 turkey subs from Subway, 55 Kit Kats or 118 chicken nuggets.

Most people will eat a quarter of those calories even before they tuck into their festive lunch, says the survey – with the average Christmas dinner containing about 1,450 calories alone.

The rest of the calories come from eating countless mince pies, chocolate, smoked salmon starters, cheese and Christmas pudding throughout the day – not to mention the glasses of bubble and other festive tipples we all enjoy.
It all adds up to about 210g of fat in a day.
If they eat this much, the average person will gain 7 lbs over the festive period alone – and if they ate this many calories all year round, they would gain 26 stone a year.
You would need to do 21.5 hours of walking, 13 hours of aerobics or 7.5 hours on the treadmill to burn off your Christmas Day calories.
But the survey by Wren Kitchens also revealed more than half of Brits don’t bother calorie counting at Christmas, with many seeing the festive period as a ‘get out of jail free card’ to eat whatever they want, and as much as they want.
The great British festive feast begins quite modestly, with Brits opting for a breakfast of toast or fruit salad, says the study.

But by 10am, most of us have cracked into the chocolate selection box with a side of crisps, nuts and sweets – and over a third have started on the celebratory tipple before noon.
But indulging on a calorific morning of confectionary, fruit juice and champagne means most Brits will have hit their recommended dietary allowance of calories and fat intake before the main event has even begun.

Matt Plowman, of Cardiff Sports Nutrition, has warned festive diners not to make it a habit.
He said: ‘Eating 6,000 calories each day would not only cause you to gain a stone every two weeks, but you’d also become incredibly ill.
‘You’d risk becoming insulin resistant – this can happen within two days of eating meals with that amount of fat and is a precursor to diabetes.
‘The body can also become overloaded with free radicals, causing inflammation within the body and damaging cells.’
