A craze for extreme fitness regimes is leading to a wave of hip and knee operations on adults in their 20s, surgeons have warned.
High-intensity exercise routines such as ‘cross fit’, ‘sumo squats’ and indoor cycling are creating injuries not usually seen until their 50s or 60s.
The fitness programmes aim to allow participants to work out without taking too much time out of their busy schedules.

But Gorav Datta, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at University Hospital Southampton, said that he now sees 200 patients below the age of 30 every year for injuries sustained as a result of extreme sport.
‘Two or three years ago I would have see about 50 a year,’ he said. ‘They would all be either military people or professional footballers. Now we are seeing all kinds of people.

‘High-intensity, cult fitness trends such as sumo squats, cross fit and soul cycle have a lot to answer for, but preventative measures can easily be taken to avoid serious health risks.’
Of the patients he sees, Mr Datta said around a quarter go under the knife. The boom in injuries was recorded in the BMJ Sport and Exercise Medicine journal in January.
In that study, Oxford University researchers calculated that the number of keyhole hip operations in England had increased by 730 per cent between 2002 and 2013.

They forecasted a further 1,400 per cent increase in cases by 2023 while noting that the average age for the procedure fell from the mid-40s in 2002, to the mid-30s in 2013.
Mr Datta said Britons are trying to cram intense sport into their increasingly busy lives. He said that for some young people, fitness has become a ‘religion’ – with obsessive exercise fanatics working their bodies beyond their limits.
Instead, he suggests adults should concentrate on moderate or non-impact workouts.
He highlighted cross fit – a regime which focuses on carrying out repetitive exercises in as short a period as possible – as a particular menace.
The programme, which includes 50 repetitions of ten exercises including sit-ups and pull-ups, is a source of an ‘alarming’ number of back injuries, he said.
Sumo squats – exercises to strengthen the legs and core muscles, are also problematic, as are high-intensity indoor cycling workouts also known as ‘spinning’ or ‘soul cycle’.
Mr Datta said: ‘Whilst a great cardio workout, spinning raises caution for back injuries… alongside hip impingement.’
