Gap in death rate narrows for blacks, whites with HIV

NEW YORK (AP) — For many years, black Americans infected with the AIDS virus have died at much higher rates than whites or Hispanics. But the gap appears to be closing.

A new government report out Thursday says the death rate for blacks with HIV dropped 28 percent over five years. The rate fell for whites and Hispanics too, but not as dramatically.

But blacks still have much higher rates of HIV infection than other Americans.
