It isn’t a secret that eating the right foods can fill your body with vitamins and nutrients. There are some foods available, right now, in your kitchen that can take care of daily problems like hiccups.

Eating right and keeping healthy nutritionally is an important part of a recovering person’s lifestyle. Those new to sobriety are also often concerned about taking any pills or pharmaceuticals. That’s understandable; no one wants to trigger a relapse.

But what can be done when a minor health problem shows up?

It’s important to remember that serious conditions will need the help of a physician, but it may not hurt to reach for one of natural home remedies when you have a minor health problem.

Ginger

Chinese medicine has depended on ginger for centuries. Ginger helps improve blood flow and reduce muscle inflammation. Ginger has been found to be as effective as ibuprofen for relieving pain when brewed as tea.

Cranberries

These red berries contain proanthocyanidins, a compound that fights bacteria that are behind urinary tract infections. The proanthocyanidins has been demonstrated to keep the bacteria from attaching to the walls of the bladder. While cranberries won’t cure a bladder infection, consuming them daily will help protect against infections in the future.

Calcium-Rich Foods

For women prone to mood swings during “that time of month,” calcium-rich foods will fix the low blood calcium levels which play a part in causing PMS. Dairy products are packed with calcium, but so are broccoli, greens and sardines.

Oatmeal

Itchy and inflamed skin can be calmed with oatmeal because it is loaded with phytochemicals that have anti-inflammatory properties. A soothing bath can be made by grinding 1/3 cup in your blender and pouring the powder into lukewarm water. Use 1/4 cup of oatmeal, and water, to make a paste that can be applied directly to the skin for ten minutes.

Sea Salt

Rough and dry patches on the knees and elbows can be fixed without expensive skincare products. Make a sea salt scrub and it will work just as well as a good exfoliator. Mix a cup of sea salt with 1/2 cup of massaging oil and stir. Keep the mixture moist, like wet sand, and not runny.

Cucumbers

Chilled cucumber slices on the eyes looks silly, but the beauty trick reduces puffiness. Since cucumbers are 90 percent water, they offer a cooling sensation which causes blood vessels to constrict. Since cucumber slices fit the eyes contours better than ice packs, they make a great replacement in achieving fresher-looking eyes.

Prunes

Dried plums, rich in insoluble fiber, helps fight constipation. Insoluble fiber doesn’t dissolve in water and makes more bulk so waste can be pushed through the digestive system. Prunes also contain sorbitol and dihydrophenylisatin which are natual laxatives. Start with one a day and then increase to two if you don’t notice a response.

Sugar

When the diaphragm goes through a series of spasms, we hear it as “hiccups”. Putting a teaspoon of sugar underneath the tongue can fool the body into stopping the spasms. The sugar is strong enough to stimulate the vegas never which reasons as far down as the diaphragm to control the stomach.

Apples

Apples contain pectin, a soluble fiber that absorbs stomach acid. Organic red and golden delicious apples are considered alkaline foods that work to restore pH balance.
