Whether it’s smart televisions, cars or phones, intelligent tech devices are taking over most industries.

And now, a new smart toothbrush has shaken up the world of oral hygiene and taken an otherwise mundane daily chore to a whole new level… but how far is too far?

Global power brush brand, Oral B, recently created the ‘genius’ – the world’s first electric toothbrush that offers position detection technology to ensure users don’t miss any spots.

The ‘intelligent’ toothbrush, which retails for AUD $369, uses tiny motion sensors in the brush and video recognition (via the Oral B app) to track where the brush is in the mouth.

This, in theory, then ensures all the teeth, gum areas and tongue are sufficiently cleaned – ultimately leading to healthier and longer-lasting oral hygiene.

Not only does it use position detection, but the bluetooth app also times how long people are brushing their teeth for and if too much pressure is applied, the toothbrush glows red and the head slows down and pulsates.

Using the gaming mindset, the app also turns the chore into a competition, with a graph showing how well users do in each session.

This is then thought to make them want to do a better job each time and beat their previous score.

As a result, research has shown those using the genius brush are brushing for an average of two minutes and 27 seconds, compared to the average person who brushes for less than a minute.

The brush also has a number of luxuries – including the option to choose from six different brushing modes to meet different needs including daily clean, deep clean, sensitive, whitening, gum massage and tongue clean.

HOW CAN THIS BRUSH IMPROVE OUR DENTAL HABITS?

– Up to 80 per cent of people spend insufficient time brushing in at least one zone in their mouth

– 60 per cent of people either don’t brush their back molars at all or spend insufficient time brushing them

– Teeth in the lower right quadrant miss out the most

– The tracking system shows users when they are missing these important areas

There are also different programs to guide users to achieve different results and four different brush types to boost their effectiveness.

These include programs for fresh breath, fighting plaque, whitening, gum health and ‘ortho care.’

Other luxuries include a ‘smart ring’ lighting system where users can choose from 12 different coloured lights and a smartphone holder for people to place their phone while brushing.

The travel case also includes a smartphone holder and simultaneously charges the phone and the toothbrush.

Leading dentist and Oral-B consultant, Clinical Associate Professor Matthew Hopcraft, believes the luxe device can help people achieve better dental health in the long run.

‘We know that patients are not brushing their teeth correctly, even though they think they are; they brush too hard, do not brush for long enough, and completely miss some zones of the mouth,’ he said.

‘Over time, brushing incorrectly can result in tooth decay and even early tooth loss.

‘This new brushing system helps us coach patients to brush properly, and improve these three main areas of brushing behaviors that affect their oral health.’

Despite this, the luxury certainly doesn’t come cheap and only time will tell whether the tech savvy device is truly worth saving for.
