A toddler given just a 10 per cent chance to survive after losing four limbs to septic shock continues to fight for his life.

Kamil Williams was 10 months old when he was taken to hospital with suspected pneumonia – but his condition deteriorated overnight.

He was rushed to intensive care and put on life support after his lungs began to fail and his parents were warned it was unlikely he would pull through.

Tests then revealed he had septic shock – a deadly infection that causes organ failure.

Doctors prescribed him antibiotics in a desperate attempt to fight the infection, but they reduced his blood flow and forced him to have his hands and lower legs amputated earlier this year.

But he continues to defy all medical expectations and his family hope he will eventually be able to leave hospital and return home.

His mother Portia Hasan, 29, from Philadelphia, said: ‘We’ve been through hell and back. But he’s a fighter and he shows us all not to quit.

‘He’s been in hospital for over a year now and it’s been hard for the family but he’s our little superman.

‘Septic shock can be fatal but it was a relief that they finally knew what was going on.

‘We don’t know how he got it, but more should be done to spread awareness for this terrible infection.

‘We’re just so thankful the doctors caught it in time.’

His parents took him to hospital in December last year with a fever, suspecting something was wrong.

Ms Hasan said she knew he was unwell when he was no longer smiling and laughing like he usually was.

Doctors initially believed he was suffering from pneumonia, but tests revealed it wasn’t – leaving the family in the dark as to what was actually wrong.

WHAT IS SEPTIC SHOCK?

Septic shock is a life-threatening condition that happens when your blood pressure drops to a dangerously low level after an infection.

Any type of bacteria can cause the infection. Fungi such as candida and viruses can also be a cause, although this is rare.

At first the infection can lead to a reaction called sepsis. This begins with weakness, chills, and a rapid heart and breathing rate.

Left untreated, toxins produced by bacteria can damage the small blood vessels, causing them to leak fluid into the surrounding tissues.

This can affect your heart’s ability to pump blood to your organs, which lowers your blood pressure and means blood doesn’t reach vital organs, such as the brain and liver.

People with a weakened immune system have an increased risk of developing septic shock.

He was given emergency surgery for abdominal compartment syndrome – caused by abnormal blood pressure – but doctors couldn’t find a cause.

Medics gave him intravenous antibiotics to help the fight the infection after he was diagnosed with third-stage septic shock.

The infection can be fatal and happens when blood pressure drops to

However, he suffered from peripheral arterial disease which limited circulation and as result the infected tissues began to die.

In February, Kamil had both hands amputated and two days later he had below the knee legs amputation and has been in hospital fighting for his life since.

However, Kamil continues to surprise medics and the 21-month has become a Instagram star with over 21,000 followers @just.kamil- rooting for his health.

Ms Hasan added: ‘It was a very emotional time.

‘But watching how he has thrived without limbs has just been a miracle. I just pray he can come home so we can all be together again.’

Now the family are raising money to buy prosthetics for the adorable tot to help him adapt to his new life through GoFundMe.
