A mother was told she had breast cancer just hours before her daughter’s final day of gruelling treatment for the same disease.
Sandra Goldsmith, 54, said she was so stunned that she started laughing in sheer disbelief when she was diagnosed in June.
She Mrs Goldsmith, of Rainham, Essex, will now be treated by the same specialists as her daughter Vikki Powell.
Mrs Powell was diagnosed in September last year when she was 30, just three months after she’d had her second child.
She found a lump while breastfeeding and initially dismissed it but tests revealed she had stage three breast cancer.
Sandra Goldsmith was diagnosed with breast cancer just as the family was set to hold a party to celebrate her daughter Vikki Powell finishing treatment for the same disease
Her relieved family were set to throw a party to celebrate her last radiotherapy session after she successfully underwent almost a year of treatment.
But the knees-up was quickly shelved when Mrs Goldsmith was diagnosed.
‘I went to see my consultant for a call back from a mammogram and I was told I had breast cancer,’ said Mrs Goldsmith.

‘My first reaction was to start laughing. I just couldn’t believe it. I kept saying how you couldn’t write a book about it.
‘The last year has been horrible and unbelievable. Me and Vikki sit around and have chats about it all so it does help but I try not to put too much on her.
‘I am now trying to get through to the other side – I’ve got to keep myself going and fight it.’
Mrs Goldsmith has started fundraising for Macmillan Cancer Support and Cancer Research UK.
Mrs Goldsmith has raised more than £3,000 for charity so far after having her head shaved
She decided to have her head shaved after watching her daughter lose her hair through treatment.
‘It would be far more upsetting to sit indoors and lose my hair over time,’ she said Sandra.
‘My outlook is that if some good can come from all this horrible time my life will have been of some use.
‘The support I have received from everybody has been amazing – it’s really given me something to smile about.’
