A brave mother has shared a raw photograph of herself in the hopes of bringing awareness to the impact of breast cancer.

In 2013 Kimi Maxwell, from Perth, Australia, was diagnosed with breast cancer while pregnant with her second child.

The mum had a double mastectomy while still pregnant in the hopes of beating the cancer, and then posed for a celebratory photoshoot when she did.

The cancer survivor posted with her arms raised and biceps flexed, with the words ‘I survived’ written on her chest.

An arrow was draw on pointing to her pregnant belly, and the words ‘So did I,’ written on it.

The photo, which is a stunning sepia shot, was taken by photographer Nikki Fisher Holmes.

Ms Fisher Holmes, wanting to share Ms Maxwell’s story, posted the picture on mummy blogger Constance Hall’s Facebook page.

‘I think Kimi is your kind of queen and deserves the recognition!’ the photographer wrote.

‘I took this photo of Kimi when she was pregnant and had been battling breast cancer…she wanted to bare all to raise awareness.’

Ms Maxwell, who is currently almost finished with reconstructive surgery and is in remission, commented on the post about how grateful she was for the photoshoot.

‘Huge thanks to Nikki Fisher Holmes for doing her part for all the ladies and their journeys,’ the mum said.

'You had me almost naked and feeling safe, respected and beautifully captured my message,' the mum wrote of her photographer Nikki Fisher Holmes

‘You had me almost naked and feeling safe, respected and beautifully captured my message. The ultimate in professional photography I feel. Anything you do from your gorgeous heart is a masterpiece.’

The photo seemed to have struck a cord with many other women, with plenty commenting on the photo and giving Ms Maxwell their support.

The photographer, who now has a business etching memorial portraits into stone, told Daily Mail Australia that she loved Kimi’s ‘feisty attitude’ when they met.

‘She faced her battle head on and I never heard her whinge and she just showed so much strength which showed through in the photos. Kimi’s goal was to raise awareness and she certainly succeeded in that with the photos being shared around the world, I was really proud of her and honored to play a part in that,’ she said.
