Research Confirms That Insanely Hot Guy at the Bar is Probably a Jerk

That cute guy you met last weekend might be easy on the eyes, but admit it—he’s not exactly Prince Charming. Don’t blame it on a bad taste in men. New research could finally prove what we’ve been telling each other all along: The most attractive ones are more likely to be a-holes.

The study, published in the journal Evolutionary Psychology, used 3D models to analyze the body size and proportion of 62 women and 63 men. The researchers then measured the participants’ attractiveness using factors such as waist-to-hip ratio in women and “torso v-shapedness” (waist-to-chest ratio) in men. They also used two surveys and an exercise to evaluate the men and women’s social and political opinions.

A group of 10 people of the opposite sex then scored each participant from one (unattractive) to seven (attractive). Finally, a different group of 12 “raters,” six men and six women, scored participants on a scale of one (selfish and competitive) to seven (altruistic and egalitarian).

Turns out, the hottest guys were more likely to show signs of selfishness and less likely to believe in equality than their less-attractive counterparts. Overall, women tended to buy into egalitarianism more than men.

The study authors point out that attractiveness in men correlated with their their all-about-me attitudes “above and beyond” many other factors, including wealth. Why? It’s not too hard to guess: Researchers theorize that strong, attractive men throughout history have pretty much always had the cards stacked in their favor—so they’re not nice because they don’t have to be. Empathy helps women be better mothers and form more social connections, though, which is why study authors think they didn’t see the same connection in females.
