Scalia’s many health problems unknown to public before death

WASHINGTON (AP) — The late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s extensive medical conditions were unknown to the public before his death on Feb. 13 at age 79.

The scant information the court provided about Scalia’s health reflects an institution that zealously guards the justices’ privacy. Decisions about how much to reveal are left to each justice.

The district attorney in the Texas county where Scalia died provided The Associated Press details of a letter from Scalia’s doctor that listed coronary artery disease, obesity and diabetes, among other ailments that probably contributed to the justice’s unexpected death.
