They were billed as the answer to slimmers’ prayers: a low-fat sausage that tasted delicious without resulting in weight gain.
Dieters went mad for the Porky Lights, with many buying hundreds of packets at a time – leading to empty shelves, arguments in the aisles and furious online rows.
But the healthy bangers – supposedly three per cent fat and 78 calories each – could be in fact much fattier than the nutritional information on the packaging suggests, an investigation by Slimming World has revealed.
They used to count for just 0.5 ‘Syn’ points on the diet – but now the company has upped the syn count to a staggering 4.5 following an analysis of one batch.
A spokesperson for Porky Lights told MailOnline: ‘G White Co are currently in dialogue with Slimming World to establish how their values were ascertained, but want to unequivocally state that the results are neither consistent between their own batch tests and are highly inconsistent with the nutritional results that have been produced by numerous tests, over a number of months from a number of independent UKAS approved food laboratories.’
Porky Lights sausages were fought over in supermarket aisles a few weeks ago because of their low Syn and calorie count but now a test has suggested they could be loaded with fat
The news broke on one of Slimming World’s Facebook pages: Pinch of Nom: Slimming World Recipes. It’s since been confirmed to be true by a Slimming World representative
The news broke on one of the dozens of Slimming World recipe idea Facebook pages, where dieters mourned the revelations.
Others said it was ‘karma’ for the ‘greedy’ slimmers who had bulk bought so many of the Porky Lights sausages, causing supermarkets to sell out within hours of them being stocked.

Slimming World has now confirmed the rumours, and told FEMAIL that they had performed an analysis of one batch of the sausages which revealed them to be much higher in fat than the packaging states.
Allison Brentnall, head of food at Slimming World, said: ‘We sent a batch of the Porky Lights sausages away for nutritional analysis as we felt concerned about the fatty texture. This is something we do routinely with products that we worry may affect our members’ weight losses.
The sausages sold out within hours of being stocked at supermarkets as slimmers were desperate to get their hands on them as they only counted as 0.5 Syns
Slimmers who have been eating the supposedly low-fat sausages are devastated by the news – though those who didn’t manage to buy any are finding the incident ‘funny’
‘The analysis of this batch suggests that the sausages are indeed much higher in fat than the nutritional information on the product’s packaging had indicated – and this would affect their Syn value significantly.
‘We’ve let Porky Lights know about our findings and, in order to protect our members’ weight losses, which is always our priority, we have temporarily removed the sausages from our Syns database.’
She added that Slimming World has advised that the sausages should now count for roughly 4.5 Syns while the investigation continues.
Porky Lights has been contacted for comment.
Slimmers said they were ‘devastated’ at the news, particularly as the sausages had become increasingly hard to come by because their low Syn count had caused a surge in popularity. Normal sausages count for five Syn points.
Some slimmers have blamed eating a lot of the supposedly low-fat sausages on their small weight losses
Supermarkets were almost always sold out of the product, with desperate slimmers willing to pay the £7.50 delivery charge when ordering them directly from the manufacturer’s website just so they could get their hands on them.
Slimming World dieter Sam Summers, 26, a senior PR executive from Gloucester, said the news was a kick in the teeth.
She said: ‘It’s thrown many of us who follow the Slimming World plan. We allocate ourselves five to 15 Syns per day and we make changes to accommodate this.
‘Those of us lucky enough to get our hands on Porky Lights are now going to have been way over our Syn count on the days we’ve eaten them. After spending weeks trying to get my hands on them, I couldn’t believe how amazing they tasted.
‘They don’t taste like other 3 per cent fat sausages and seemed too good to be true – now we know they were.
‘It’s such a shame. And to think some have been so desperate as to pay £7.50 postage from the Porky Whites website just to get their hands on some. I don’t imagine they’re going to be best pleased.’
Online, the reaction has been similar, with fans devastated at the revelations.
But those who didn’t manage to buy any of the low-fat sausages have revelled in the news, laughing at what they called ‘greedy’ slimmers who bulk bought products at the supermarket.
