Suspect dead after killing sheriff’s deputy at Minnesota hospital

(Reuters) – A sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed on Sunday by a suspect who was being guarded at a Minnesota hospital, and the assailant later died, state authorities said.

The deputy, who guarding a person under investigation, was shot and killed around 5:15 a.m. CDT (1015 GMT) at St. Cloud Hospital, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

Security officers responded and “subdued” the suspect, who later died, the agency said. No other hospital patients or staff were injured during the incident, which was confined to a patient room.

No other details were immediately available.

Authorities planned to release more information later Sunday at a news conference in St. Cloud, located about 60 miles northwest of Minneapolis.
