Chantele Nielsen has been left wheelchair-bound, suffering from ‘narcolepsy’ and even forgot who her mother was after having the HPV jab

A 13-year-old girl has been left wheelchair-bound, suffering from ‘narcolepsy’ and even forgot who her mother was after having the HPV jab, her mother claims.

Leissa Nielsen’s teenage daughter Chantele, from Hessle, East Yorkshire, had the vaccination to protect her from cervical cancer at the end of April.

Since then, Ms Nielsen claims Chantele has suffered debilitating side effects including fainting up to eight times daily, uncontrollable sleep episodes, painful headaches, neck pain, blurred vision and even memory loss.

The 46-year-old, who works for the fire service, said: ‘Sometimes she will suddenly faint, which lasts around 30 seconds, but then she will go into a deep sleep.

‘When it first happened she was unable to talk for 14 hours. She couldn’t remember what day it was or answer any simple maths questions.’

During these episodes Chantele says she can hear her mother trying to rouse her but due to temporary paralysis is unable to respond.

Ms Nielsen said: ‘She once had an episode which left her completely paralysed in the bath when I left her for two minutes.

‘There are no signs or indication as to when she is going to faint – it’s awful. I’ve cried so many times at night it’s unbelievable.’

During one episode Chantele forgot they had a one-year-old Shih Tzu called Bailey and even forgot who her mother was.

Ms Nielsen said: ‘She was upstairs in her room and we were having a nice chat.

‘I left the room to do something, came back in and she demanded “who are you? You’re not my mum”.

‘It was heartbreaking and really, really worrying because we don’t know how long she’s going to be like that. It’s awful.’

An NHS leaflet about the HPV vaccination claim that the side effects are ‘quite mild’ and that soreness, swelling and redness in the arm are ‘common but wear off in a couple of days’.

It also states that ‘more serious effects are extremely rare’.

Now when mother and daughter go out and about Chantele sits in a wheelchair for fear of fainting and injuring herself.

Baffled doctors have run blood tests, CT scans and ECGs but each time the results come back as normal.

Desperate for answers as to what was happening to her usually bright, bubbly and outgoing daughter, Ms Nielsen turned to the internet and researched Chantele’s symptoms.

She came across support group UK Association of HPV Vaccine Injured Daughters where the symptoms they discussed sounded familiar to what Chantele was experiencing.

Ms Nielsen said ‘I don’t want Chantele (pictured left before having the jab) to suffer any more or be in any more pain. I just want her to be the 13-year-old girl she should be – living a normal life’

The teenager has not attended school for the last four weeks as the staff can’t guarantee her safety.

Ms Nielsen now says she is now forced to follow her daughter’s every move in a bid to keep her safe.

She said: ‘I follow her wherever she goes around the house because I’m frightened she’s going to fall.

‘She could crack her head on anything.’

She also urged parents to find out more about the vaccination.

She said: ‘I would like parents to be more aware of it before they go ahead with it.’
