The Truth About Childhood Allergies, From Dr. Richard Besser (VIDEO)
Why are we seeing a rise in allergies? According to Dr. Richard Besser, we’re so conscious of keeping the environment that our children are in clean during their early years that we’re not exposing them to the things that trigger allergies — so their immune systems don’t have the chance to regulate them. Another theory about why allergies are on the rise is that we’re over using antibiotics, especially on children when they’re little, which kills off some of the microbes in our intestines that are very important for preventing allergies, and because of that, it’s leading to a rise in allergies later in life.

After you get a cold, your lungs and airways stay sensitive and inflamed from that virus. Using a cool mist humidifier will help combat the drying indoor heat that can further aggravate your lungs during the cold winter months. Make sure to clean it every day!
What can we do to keep ourselves healthy during the winter months? Dr. Besser says that simply getting a good night’s sleep, eating a well-balanced diet, and exercising regularly will keep you in good health!
According to Dr. Besser, the length of life is determined on genetics, traumas, stresses — but also on how you treat your body. Longevity is in the little things you do. For example, do you take the stairs, or the elevator? Use it or lose it!
When it comes to cancer fighting foods, Dr. Besser is a fan of the Mediterranean diet. It’s rich in vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, and whole grains — which are very good for fighting back against carcinogens.
In addition to getting enough sleep and eating a well-balanced diet, Dr. Besser says that frequent hand washing will help prevent you from catching a cold this winter.
If you’re concerned about your kids not liking vegetables, Dr. Besser says that presenting them with a variety until you find one that they like is key. Make sure they’re getting plenty of green and orange vegetables — green veggies are high in vitamin B, and orange veggies like carrots and pumpkin are high in vitamin A and C
