UV rays continue damage in the dark

The damage caused by ultraviolet radiation takes place many hours after you spend time in the sun, even if it’s dark out, according to researchers from Yale University who say this is an important discovery in skin protection.

Knowing this means that we could take measures to prevent the damage and the research team says this could lead to an “evening after” cream.

Such a cream, they say, would prevent DNA damage that occurs when UV rays activate two enzymes that send melanin haywire in a process called chemiexcitation.

The study was published in the journal Science.
