Footage of a man’s defiant recovery from violent crime has become an internet smash-hit – four years after the fact.
Alan Crowley was in the middle of a photo-a-day project when he was targeted by a random attacker in Dublin, Ireland, in 2011.
Yet, despite sustaining dramatic injuries to his face and requiring both 50 stitches and reconstructive surgery, he continued with the film venture.
The 27-second clip was initially designed to illustrate the graduate’s gradual ageing over a 12-month period. But the violent trauma instead made the footage an impressive medical diary.
Although it opens with simple profile selfies, the tone of the video changes when the first attack image appears at 9 seconds.
Taken from a hospital bed, the injury is visibly raw and bloody.

Damage: The graduate sustained dramatic injuries to his face and required both 50 stitches and reconstructive surgery
But subsequent shots show how doctors were able to repair his face and minimise the cosmetic damage.
Thankfully, by the end of the video, the scar looks barely noticeable.
In recent months, the video has amassed more than 2.1 million views and garnered countless supportive comments.

Interestingly, Alan himself responded to the comments by saying: “Blown away by all the comments! Some kind, some ridiculous and some hilarious.”

He also confessed to being ’embarrassed’ by the scar because people made “assumptions about my character”.
Mr Crowley’s attacker, Thomas O’Connell, was jailed in 2012 for two and a half years after pleading guilty to assault.
