This year, there were some major upsets, with a few old favorites and a couple of up-and-coming surprises making the cut!

Last year’s top pick, Bangkok, is noticeably absent from the list. Other popular destinations like Cape Town and Paris are also missing this year. So what did make this list? And which city is the TOP travel destination of 2014?

Kyoto, the former imperial capital of Japan, is located on Japan’s largest and most populous island, Honshu and has long been known as the country’s most beautiful city. No doubt the Imperial Palace and its gardens, the gorgeous temples and the city’s cherry blossoms helped it earn this year’s top spot.
