Chef Antonio Carluccio, 77, answers our health quiz.
Can you run up the stairs?
I
could, but I prefer to exercise in keeping with my age, pottering
around the garden of my London home. In the country, I’ll walk three to
four miles when hunting for wild mushrooms. I had both my knees replaced
six or seven years ago, which has helped my mobility enormously – my
knee problems stemmed from doing the triple jump as a teenager.

Get your five a day?
Yes.
I love fruit, especially peaches. The Italian diet is high in
vegetables such as tomatoes. I eat all kinds of meat, but often prefer
dishes like stuffed peppers, and eat meat less now than I used to.
Ever dieted?
Three
years ago, I decided to eat half what was on my plate as I felt
sluggish. I lost more than 2st over a couple of years and now I’m 15½
st, which I feel great on. I’m 5ft?8in – I’ve been told for my bone
structure, that weight is fine.
Any vices?
I’ve smoked for 60
years, having 20 to 30 cigarettes a day at the most. These days, I’ve
cut down and don’t inhale, just puff. I prefer a cigar called a Toscano
because I like the smell, and a doctor has said my lungs are fine.
For
years, I was a wine merchant, but couldn’t drink much wine, as it was
too acidic and gave me an upset stomach. I used to drink the odd whisky,
but as it produces euphoria followed by a sense of feeling down, I cut
that out. I drink a lot of very good-quality water instead.

Pop any pills?
I
take a few given to me by the doctor. I can’t explain what they do to
me, but I feel well. One is an antidepressant medication I’ve taken for
15 years.
Ever Googled an illness?
No, I’m computer illiterate; I
have someone do my Facebook page for me. I’ve been going to my doctor
for 30 years and trust him to tell me what is wrong and what to do.
Any family ailments?
My
family have all lived to a good age and there is no history of cancer. I
had a heart attack when I was 39, but that was more stress-related than
a physical problem. Last year I had a pacemaker fitted as my heartbeat
was a little irregular.
Cope well with pain?
Usually, I just smile and visualise an attractive landscape if I’m at the dentist where I might experience discomfort.
Is sex important?
As important as food; the one without the other is hard to imagine.
Ever been depressed?
My
battles with depression have been well documented and I’ve experienced
it on and off throughout my life. When I was last ill, in 2008, I had
some counselling as well as medication. I am perfectly well mentally now
– the pills are working well.
Hangover cure?
I lived in Germany for 15 years and learned a drastic cure – herring rollmops for breakfast.Â
Like to live for ever?
If I can keep all my senses and remain fit and healthy, yes.
Antonio Carluccio’s Pasta, published by Quadrille, is out now for £20.
