A Playlist to Help You Work Your Whole Body

Every week, Your New Favorite Playlist introduces you to workout-worthy tunes from a different fitness brand. This week Transformer with Disq from Crunch Gyms shares one of its latest playlists.

The people in the photo above aren’t wearing some kind of strange fanny packs—they’re wearing something called Disq, a device invented by Dutch speed skaters. Disq consists of three parts: one that you strap around your hips, and two that you secure to each ankle. The idea is that you loop cords in the belt through a piece on your ankles—and then you can use the dials on each side of your hips to increase or decrease the resistance as needed during different exercises.

Crunch Gyms recently added a new class using the gear to its roster: Transformer with Disq. The workouts are filled with moves like skaters and squat jumps, but they’re harder than normal since Disq adds resistance. “It is a total-body workout,” says Kelley Green, a group fitness instructor at Crunch who teaches Transformer with Disq, among other classes. Each session is 45 minutes long, including “35 minutes of hardcore work”—so Green relies on music to help get her students through the class. “Music not only encourages but inspires you, so you work a little bit harder,” she says. Here’s the mix she used in a recent class. (You’ll notice it’s a little longer than 45 minutes since Green likes to have music playing when students are arriving and leaving.)
