Having trouble getting enough sleep is a problem that many face.

And it can contribute to relationship squabbles ? as women manage to get an extra hour a night, a study of 2,000 Britons suggests.

The average woman in the UK sleeps around eight hours a night, while men typically sleep just seven hours.

Six in 10 couples said this sleep imbalance has caused “tension” in their relationship.

More than half have slept separately to get some extra sleep and one in ten have used separate bedrooms, the results showed.

The poll, by the CBD brand Natural jug on the country’s sleeping habits, suggests that while 60 percent of women go to bed earlier than their partner, 66 percent of men wake up earlier in the morning because they need less sleep.

The NHS recommends getting seven to nine hours of sleep a night, but warns that a third of Britons will struggle with insomnia at some point – when they have regular sleep problems.

Brits reported that the biggest sleep disruptor was the heat, with 64 per cent of men and 62 per cent having trouble getting enough shut-eye in hot weather.

Light, stress, noise, snoring, toilet breaks and pets were some of the other factors that most often interrupted sleep.

But the results suggest that sex may help people who have trouble falling asleep, as 76 percent of women and 82 percent of men said they sleep better after intimacy.

A Naturecan spokesperson said: ‘We all know how crucial good sleep is to our overall wellbeing.

‘These results show that we sleep less during these hot summer months in particular and that many couples have a completely different sleeping pattern.

“Sleep imbalances can cause major problems in a relationship because intimacy inevitably suffers if we’re not in bed together.”

However, experts have suggested that it is true that women get more sleep than men – because women multitask and use their brains more than men.

“As a result, their need for sleep is greater,” says Professor Jim Horne, emeritus professor of psychophysiology at Loughborough University.
