Bipolar II: Floating Above The Line

Most people educated in Bipolar disorder are familiar with the term Bipolar I, however, sometimes when I say I have Bipolar II I get a follow up question, “What’s that?”

If someone were to Google Bipolar II a flurry of website would pop up with medical information that can seem like you are reading an encyclopedia.  I try to explain it visually.  Imagine a line that signifies a person going along in life without a mental illness. When you have Bipolar I you go up and down and up and down with that line in the middle.  Now, imagine that same line. When you are Bipolar II you exist above that line.  You are hypomanic so you are not going up and down with extremities but simmering above the surface in a hypo manic state.  You can dip down below the line during bouts of depression and go higher up during bouts of mania but, for the most part you float along above the line in a hypo manic Bipolar II state.

Some people need a visual to learn.  Reading a plethora of websites on Bipolar II is informative and important, however, in my experience, I have found drawing that horizontal line on a page slightly above the main line with vertical lines running up and down worth a demonstration.  And that horizontal line representing Bipolar II above the main line allows a visual explanation that people can understand above and beyond internet information.

And they are apparently too stupid to realize how easy it is to ensure they are called out for their bad behavior.
