A mother’s emotional plea warning parents of the dangers of letting their children ride skateboards without a helmet after her daughter ended up in intensive care has gone viral.

Emma Fairthorne, from Bournemouth, posted the clip on Facebook, revealing that Georgia, 19, had been put into an induced coma following brain surgery after she tripped over a stone.

In the footage, which has been viewed nearly 800,000 times, a tearful Emma can be seen standing outside the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. She says: ‘It’s my baby girl in there.

Bournemouth teenager Georgia Fairthorne (left with her mother Emma), 19, was skating with her siblings in Pembrokeshire last week when she tripped over a stone

‘She was out playing with her sisters – she’d had a really nice week with us down here.

‘The older ones decided to go out on the skateboards – I heard them at the front of the house.

‘I thought I ought to check they weren’t going far as it was quite late.

‘About half an hour later Hermione [a relative of Georgia’s] came running in saying “It’s Georgia, it’s Georgia!”‘

Georgia is currently in intensive care in hospital in Cardiff following her devastating fall

Emma, who also shared a clip of Georgia just hours before the incident, then goes on to explain how a passing car drove her to the site of Georgia’s crash, where the teenager had regained consciousness after having a fit.

She was rushed to hospital and was then put in an induced coma after having surgery on her brain.

Emma continues in the video: ‘I just want all the kids out there to know…please, please.

Her devastated mother Emma has shared details of Georgia’s progress with friends and family on Facebook

‘It’s the summer holidays and I know it’s not cool to wear a helmet.

‘We didn’t have one that fitted Georgia but I just didn’t think. She didn’t go down a massive hill.

‘I wish as a mum that I had provided her with a helmet.

‘I’m just praying the best possible outcome happens for her.

‘That should have been a broken wrist or ankle… not brain surgery and intensive care.

Following brain surgery, Georgia’s longterm prognosis is unclear

‘So please guys, please… just take care. Take care of your kids and get them a helmet.’

Emma is now updating Georgia’s friends and family on her condition through her Facebook blog Georgia On My Mind.

In an update this morning, Emma said: ‘We have had a fairly good evening apart from a couple of little problems.

‘She keeps having what looks to use like a tiny seizure fit, almost like she’s trying to cough something up which has caused a spike in her brain pressure.

‘It’s been rising quite quickly and dropping to get back to normal.

‘It may be a case of her body kind of sending too many signals to the brain and being a little bit overworked because she’s been sedated.

‘They want to bring her round and test her reflexes and where we’re at.

‘We’ve had some really good progress yesterday but today might not be as great.

‘I’m in hoping they keep the sedation really high. She’s looking better in herself which is great. The movement yesterday was absolutely incredible.

‘I know it’s not going to be plain sailing but I am rooting for her.’

Last night she revealed that Georgia had been able to squeeze her’s and her friend’s hands – something she described as ‘amazing.’
