Yugabyte, the company behind the open-source distributed SQL database, YugabyteDB, announced that the Center for Internet Security (CIS) has published a benchmark report on the YugabyteDB database.

The CIS benchmark report, which was compiled in collaboration with the Yugabyte security team, highlights Yugabyte’s commitment to enabling its customers to successfully define and implement a comprehensive security program using Yugabyte’s distributed PostgreSQL database solution.

Users of open-source databases can use the CIS-recommended security configurations and operational best practices in the report to better protect business-critical data, avoid cybersecurity gaps, and better meet regulatory compliance requirements.

The CIS benchmark report analyzed YugabyteDB database architecture, components, and potential security risks, and provided a comprehensive set of security guidelines specifically for the Yugabyte database.

The globally recognized CIS benchmark reports are developed by cybersecurity experts and consist of more than 100 secure configuration guidelines. The objective of the benchmark reports is to guide security practitioners in effectively configuring, implementing, and managing their cybersecurity defenses for cloud platforms, cloud services, databases, network devices, and other systems and platforms.

“As the digital landscape evolves, ensuring the utmost security and performance of your database is crucial,” said Maurice Olsen, Sr. Director, Information Security and Compliance at Yugabyte. “The CIS Benchmark for YugabyteDB showcases our commitment to meeting stringent industry security standards, as we provide our customers with a secure, highly performant, and resilient database, capable of safely managing a large volume of critical data.”

One of the key advantages of using YugabyteDB is that it offers the familiarity of PostgreSQL with the scalability and resilience required for cloud-native environments. As the first distributed SQL database to complete the CIS benchmark, Yugabyte joins a select group of databases including Oracle, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, Cassandra, SQL Services, and Db2.

Founded in 2016 by former Oracle and Facebook engineers, Yugabyte is backed by Lightspeed Venture Partners, Sapphire Ventures, 8VC, Dell Technologies Capital, and others.

YugabyteDB has been recognized by Gartner in its 2023 Magic Quadrant for the category of Cloud Database Management System. The Gartner Magic Quadrant is a graphical competitive positioning of companies based on their overall Completeness of Vision and Ability to Execute.

“I am impressed with YugabyteDB’s capabilities as a distributed SQL database. It has the ability to handle large-scale global applications with ease, thanks to its fault-tolerant architecture and distributed consensus protocol. I love YugabyteDB’s support for multiple data models and access paths such as Relational, Document, and Key Value, making it extremely versatile and catering to a wide range of applications.” – CTO, IT Services Firm (via Gartner Peer Insights).

As the technology landscape continues to evolve, so do cybersecurity risks. The security configurations by CIS benchmark reports provide much-needed guidance for enhanced security posture and better alignment with security compliance to help organizations mitigate cybersecurity threats.
