Israeli researchers are working on a new contact lens that would use the eye’s tactile sensors to give blind people the ability to “feel†shapes.
A camera transmits data to electrodes in the lens on the surface of the eye. Sensors in the cornea pick up tactile signals, similar to how Braille is read through feeling raised dots.
With training, the scientists say, a person would be able to recognize the spatial information conveyed through the lens as the object captured by the camera.
The researchers have applied for funding for further trials.
