FDA approves Shionogi’s drug for unpleasant sex in women

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Health regulators pronounced on Tuesday they have authorized a drug done by Japan’s Shionogi Co to provide women experiencing pain during passionate intercourse.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized a drug, Osphena, for a form of pain famous as dyspareunia, that is a sign of vulvar and vaginal atrophy due to menopause.

Dyspareunia is compared with disappearing levels of estrogen hormones during menopause. Osphena, famous chemically as ospemifene, is a tablet that acts like estrogen on vaginal tissues to make them thicker and rebate fragile, ensuing in a rebate in pain compared with intercourse.

The drug’s tag includes a boxed warning, a many serious available, alerting patients to an increasing risk of strokes and low capillary thrombosis. Common side effects embody prohibited flashes, vaginal discharge, flesh spasms and extreme sweating.
