Heidi Klum Likes the Folded Potato Chip, Just Like YOU Do

With four kids and countless projects, Heidi Klum knows a thing or two about multitasking. The smart supermodel-turned-media mogul and clothing designer barely has time for herself—but she still manages to squeeze in fun activities with her kids and even work out. Find out how she keeps up the balancing act, plus how she spends her spare moments (hint: chips are involved).

WH: You’ve said before that you like running; what’s the most memorable place you’ve gone on a run?
Heidi: My favorite place to run is a long stretch on the West Side Highway, which goes along the Hudson River in New York City. It’s a beautiful path, and you always feel surrounded by such an amazing community. You see the same people running every morning, and they inspire me to keep going. That and knowing there is a Starbucks coffee at the end of the route!

You’ve said that you think “me time” is important. What’s your favorite “me time” activity?
My “me time” is more “me-and-my-kids time.” I love filling any free moments I have doing exciting activities with them. We go on hikes, see shows, and anything else we can to spend time together in the most fun ways.

You probably have a very busy schedule. Is there anything that you like to do when you’re really stressed out to decompress?
There’s no trick to juggling it all. Some days, you catch all the balls in the air, and some days you don’t. When I’m really stressed, I just focus on what I can do. I prefer to fill my day with positive energy.

You travel a lot. What’s your go-to airport food of choice?
I like to pack the seaweed snacks and some raw almonds. I’ll also usually pick up a container of Greek yogurt if it’s a morning flight—with a large coffee on the side.

While traveling and being on your feet so much, you still manage to look fabulous. How do stay comfortable?
Being comfortable is important to me, especially when I am traveling! I usually wear leggings or a dress. I always have Dr. Scholl’s DreamWalk insoles in my shoes—even my flats need them after running through those airport hallways. They have an entire line with different insoles for every type of shoe.

You’ve said that when you eat lunch from the catering table on set, you avoid pasta and bread—but you like to indulge every once in a while. What’s your favorite treat?
I love barbecue chips, especially the folded ones. Whenever my kids and I are eating them and they find a crunchy, folded one, they know to give it to me! I also have a serious weakness for Kinder Schokolade —for me, it tastes like home. It’s the perfect sweet treat.

What’s on your workout playlist right now?
I love anything with a good beat to pump me up. Right now, I’m loving hip-hop. You name it, it’s probably on my playlist.

What is the workout that you love to hate?
I don’t love running on a treadmill. I really prefer to be outside or get my exercise in while playing with my kids. But sometimes, after I’ve run those two miles and I check it off the list, I’m happy I took the time.

If you had to pick between eating healthy or working out every day for the rest of your life, which would you choose?
I’m not a fan of deprivation. I believe that if you want to eat a cheeseburger, you should eat that cheeseburger and enjoy it. The key to being healthy is moderation. Have one cookie instead of the whole bag!  Or go move around for 30 minutes and ride bikes with your kids if you can’t make it to the gym.

What helps you get everything done and still have time for yourself outside of work?
I love what I do. I have always been very motivated, and taking on new projects excites me. I like getting up in the morning and tackling a day!
