Do you know: Only seven out of 100 people around the world receive effective treatment for their mental health or use of substances
New research considers that effective treatment of their disorders, receives only 6.9 per cent of people with mental health disorders or substance use disorders.
Researchers from the University of British Columbia and Harvard Medical School analyzed survey data from almost 57,000 participants in 21 countries gathered over a 19-year period, to provide the most obvious picture where people end their corridor for effective treatment for nine Common concerns, mood and substance use disorders.
The main barrier to effective treatment is a person who does not recognize that he needs it, showed the study. However, even patients who contact the healthcare system often do not get effective treatment.
“This survey data enabled us to create the effective treatment indicator for mental health and use of substances,” said Chief Author, Dr. Daniel Vigo, Associate Professor of the Department of Psychiatry and the School of Population and Public Health UBC. “Policy decisions and allocation decisions should be guided by data, and this has not always been the case in the field of mental health and use of substances.”
The Global World Mental Health Surveys Initiative collects data on the prevalence, severity and treatment of mental disorders worldwide. This study focused on a survey participants who met criteria for disorder under the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental-IV disorders, a standardized classification system used by mental health professionals from 1994 to 2013.
The team was interested, led by Dr. Vigo and Dr. Ronald Kessler from Harvard, how closely participants got effective treatment to hit evidence-based guidelines and where they would come from the way.
They analyzed four main stages, and the percentage of people who went on from each step to the next:
- Recognizes their need for treatment
- Contacts the healthcare system about
- Gets a minimum level of treatment
- Gets effective treatment
They got:
- Only 46.5 per cent of people met the criteria for disorder their need for treatment.
- Of those who recognized their need, only 34.1 per cent turned to the medical system for help.
- Most people sought help (82.9 percent) adequate treatment level.
- About 47 percent of people who received adequate minimum treatment received effective treatment.
The atmosphere at different points along this path meant only 6.9 per cent effective treatment.
“Provides an understanding where the scrambles are for each of these unique and not previously available blueprint disorders for decision -makers to objectively understand problems and try to adjust the system,” said Dr. Vigo.
The study showed that patients had a significant drop in contacting the healthcare system but before they received effective treatment. Since general practitioners and GPs are their first point of contact with the system, it is necessary to ensure that these doctors have appropriate training, said Dr .. Vigo.
“The foundation of these general practitioners and GPs is to diagnose and treat the light forms to moderate, and be aware of the people who have a greater impact on them refer to specialists,” he said .
