How to Create a Custom Eye Shadow Palette That’s Totally You

“Pro palettes are great because they allow you to customize your own kit, using any brand you want,” says Lauren Cosenza, a New York City-based makeup artist. “In addition to picking only the shades you love, palettes like these allow you to avoid wasting shadows you’ll never use.”

To create your own palette effectively, the first thing to know is that there really are no rules. We swear! However, it’s always wise to include a variety of shades, which will easily satisfy your color or texture preference, say makeup artists.

“In creating your own pro palette, you easily become the makeup artist of your own life,” says Cosenza. “Depending on your shade preferences, you can create your very own color story, which easily reflects your favorite textures, mood, or even the current season.”

If you want a simple starter palette that can function for pretty much any occasion, try focusing on six to eight shades ranging from light to dark—doing this will provide you with variety, allowing you to easily mix and match, says Francesca Roman, Butterfly Studio Salon master makeup artist. “I usually love to mix a range of colors such as soft peaches, pinks, or chocolate browns with some plum and golden brown hues.”

You can also opt for choices that are guaranteed to flatter your specific eye color: Cosenza recommends pairing blue eyes with peach and copper shades, green or hazel eyes with purple and mauve tones, and brown eyes with monochromatic shades of lighter and dark browns, as well as violet and lilac shades.

If you like playing with the latest trends, Cosenza suggests experimenting with 2016’s Pantone Colors of the Year: Rose Quartz and Serenity (a baby blue). You can go in many different directions here, but it’s always wise to include a range of shades to help balance out your look. “Try selecting one shade in the blue range, one in the pink, and mix those with neutrals such as browns, grays, navys, and blacks, to build a pretty eye look,” she says.
