How To Cure Your Dog’s Leash Issues

Mondays with Marlo

We had two wonderful dog experts on the show this week. Cesar Millan, the original “Dog Whisperer” himself, came by to talk about dealing with our dogs’ behavioral quirks. And for medical advice, we paid a visit to Dr. Kim Rosenthal at the Westside Veterinary Center, where she filled us in on how to keep our dogs free from ticks, illness, and the coming winter cold.

You love your dog, and you love being outside with them, but issues with being on the leash can make both owner and animal unhappy. So Cesar came by with a few tips to help you solve your dog’s leash issues.

  • Adjust how you may be holding the leash. If the dog is behaving well off the leash, but not on it, the issues may be with your grip. “Are you holding the leash in a tense way? Are you anticipating movement?” Cesar asks. Try to loosen up the grip a little bit, and show the dog you’re relaxed.
  • Disrupt the “psychological challenge” of the walk routine. Cesar offers this small test: “Open the door, but don’t go anywhere. Just practice opening the door.” Cesar believes this changes how the dog thinks about the door, and, in turn, how they think about their outside time. If the opening of the door doesn’t necessarily indicate a walk, their anticipation triggers may also be reduced as well.
