How to Get Love Advice From Your Dead Grandma, According to a Medium

Consider that MaryAnn DiMarco—a psychic medium in New York and author of the forthcoming book Believe, Ask, Act—has a two-year waiting list. During her face-to-face reading, in which you reveal only your first name, DiMarco picks up on your energy and starts receiving messages—via symbols (like the ones in the infographic below), movielike vignettes, or soft voices—from your “team” on the other side. These can be deceased loved ones or unknown-to-you spiritual guides or angels that may hold some meaning for you, says DiMarco.

Now, DiMarco’s encouraging women to connect with their own team through a three-step process: believing they exist, asking them for guidance, and acting on their signs of advice. Practice this and Grandma Betty may start making herself known in your dreams or at times when your mind wanders from the present (so don’t worry, she won’t crash date night or sex).

In the end, this process is about connecting with your lost loved ones, but also with yourself—and how you’re really feeling when it comes to your single or taken status. Skeptical? Here are some practical ways to tap into your spiritual intuition, depending on your situation.

If you’re trying to get over an ex: You don’t have to be religious in order to connect to the other side. It’s much more important that you establish “an appreciation for something bigger than yourself,” says DiMarco. Like, for instance, the higher power you may sense when spending time outdoors. Then you may start believing a connection is possible.

Also, know this: There’s not much upside to analyzing your ex and why he behaved the way he did. If you gave it your all and things still didn’t work, focus on your own healing and hopeful outlook. “Don’t say, ‘I’ll never find someone else,’” says DiMarco.

If your love life is in limbo: Try automatic writing in a quiet place. Think of it as a spiritual freestyle writing exercise, with your team navigating the pen. If the responses leave you all “Whaaat?” then revisit them later. Hindsight can help you understand their meaning, says DiMarco.

And if something about your relationship is really bothering you, ask yourself, Am I making myself a priority here? If you’re not, or your guy isn’t, then your bond may have become a compromise that’s worth reassessing.

If your marriage feels off: Keeping a daily gratitude journal is a solid way to celebrate romantic positives and what you love about your partner, such as his sense of humor or gift-giving skills. Expressing these can help foster a deeper connection—and the desire to spend more time together.
