Women who eat full-fat yogurt once a day are less likely to develop depression, research has revealed (file picture)

A creamy yogurt a day may keep depression at bay – but no one yet knows why.

Research showed that women who had full-fat yogurt at least seven times a week were a third less likely to develop depression in the following decade.

Low-fat yogurt did not have the same effect, according to the Spanish study reported in the Journal of Nutrition.

A total of 14,539 men and women were assessed with questionnaires at the start of the study and then again after ten years.

Earlier research suggested that the brain sends signals to the gut, which is why stress and other emotions can cause gastrointestinal symptoms.

This phenomenon may be a two-way process, with bacteria in the gut affecting mood.

‘Further studies are needed to clarify why the yogurt-depression association may differ by fat content,’ says the report.

It is thought the yogurt interacts with bacteria in the gut which affects mood (file picture)
