Doctors remove orange-sized tumour from baby in womb

“If we had delivered Arthur normally or by a Caesarean section, it would have been very likely that he would have died immediately,” said Saurabh Gandhi, an obstetric consultant and sub-specialist in fetomaternal medicine at the Jessop Hospital, Sheffield.

Arthur was then delivered and underwent a four hour operation to remove the tumour, which was found to be non-cancerous. He spent several weeks in intensive care on a ventilator as he made his remarkable recovery.

The breathing tube should be taken out before his first birthday.

Mrs Fountain, from Wortley, near Sheffield, said: “Every day I look at him and can’t believe we’ve come home with him.

“He’s a very happy and contented baby which is amazing after all he’s been through. The care and support we received was fantastic, we were treated like royalty and we are both doing very well now.”
