The authors of this systematic review evaluated the vast amount of peer-reviewed research that establishes a connection between the persistence of the doctor-patient relationship and health care spending and service usage. To develop continuous measurement in value-based payment design, this information is crucial.n

n

The authors conducted a review of the literature on articles about “continuity of care” and “continuity of patient care,” as well as payor-relevant outcome categories like cost of care, ambulatory care sensitive conditions (ACSC), and ACSC hospitalizations, that were published between 2002 and 2022.n

n

The authors discovered that, throughout the research, interpersonal continuity between the doctor and patient continues to be strongly related with lower health care expenditures and higher usage of appropriate care. 18 research (out of 83) looked at the connection between continuity and medical expenses;

The authors discovered that, throughout the research, interpersonal continuity between the doctor and patient continues to be strongly related with lower health care expenditures and higher usage of appropriate care. In 83 studies, 79 evaluated the relationship between continuity and use, and 18, the relationship between continuity and health care expenses.n

What we know:

n

Research published from 1962 to the early 2000’s found that health systems have undergone a rapid transformation including the improvement of health care data systems; adoption of the patient-centered medical home model; and growth in the number of insured patients.n

n

What this study adds:

n

The new patient care, which are important in an age of value-based payment systems that strive to reduce unnecessary health care spending and inappropriate medical usage.n
