Actor and singer John Barrowman, 47, answers our health quiz

How fit are you?

I
feel fit, but I’m not in as good a shape as I have been in the past
because I’ve let myself slack off lately. I’m 47 and it’s a little more
difficult to lose weight around the waist – I’ve got a muffin top!
Because I’m starting a new U.S. TV series I’m going to go back to the
gym, and running and swimming. In the gym I’ll focus on toning rather
than building bulk because I don’t want to get any bigger. I’m 6ft but I
don’t know what I weigh at the moment.

So how healthily do you eat?

My
diet’s terrible. My partner, Scott, is always shouting at me about what
I’m eating because I grab rubbish from catering tables when I’m on the
road, or eat aeroplane food. I try to drink healthy – not sugary – juice
drinks to help replace nutrients I’m missing.

Even though my diet’s
not great, I don’t take multivitamins – I’d rather try to get them from
food or drink. I always have greens with my dinner, along with meat and
a bit of starch.

Any vices?

Twizzlers red liquorice, jelly beans,
Galaxy Ripple, Swedish Fish candy and cake. I was born in Glasgow
before later emigrating to America so, in a nod to my Scottish roots, I
love haggis.

Any family ailments?

My elder sister, mum and I
suffer from panic attacks. Mine started about 15 years ago and I could
get them a couple of times a month, but they’ve waned in recent years.
They seem to come from nowhere, although I used to be mildly
claustrophobic, which often triggered them.

When it happens my left
arm goes numb and it builds until I feel like I’m going to have a heart
attack or die. I’ve tackled it through therapy. Coffee was causing me to
be too hyper and susceptible, so I only have one latte in the morning
now.

My parents are both in their 80s and are well – Mum uses a treadmill every day and Dad gardens and does DIY.

Worst illness?

I
had swine flu and pleurisy [lung inflammation] four years ago while
doing panto in Glasgow. Scott and I both had swine flu at the same time
and we spent ten days hallucinating. It was awful. It was a good month
before I felt human again. I lost more than a stone in weight just
before filming Torchwood.

Favourite family remedy?

Sloan’s
Liniment, an old-fashioned medicated cream from the U.S. derived from
chillies for aches and pains. VicksVapo rub was a big hit, although one
time my sister took it too far and instead of rubbing it on, she
swallowed a spoonful of it when she had a terrible hacking cough. Mind
you, it seemed to cure it.

Ever tried alternative therapies?

I’ve
dabbled with acupuncture out of curiosity but for nothing specific, and
believe that they are fine when used alongside conventional medicine.

Favourite hangover cure?

Irn Bru with a bacon sandwich, or a Bloody Mary.

Any phobias?

I don’t like my neck being touched.

John Barrowman’s new album, You Raise Me Up, is released on June 30.
