CAN YOU RUN UP THE STAIRS?

Absolutely. I’m pretty fit and I do home workouts or yoga. I recently did Bear Grylls: Mission Survive on ITV, which really tested my fitness and strength.

I’m always at my fittest when I’m doing a show — even when you’re not on stage you are running around backstage doing quick changes.

GET YOUR FIVE A DAY?

Most days. I’m a vegetarian, and have been since I was about four because I struggled to separate the idea of the animal from the food.

I love peas and can happily tuck into a big bowl, but my favourite vegetables are Brussels sprouts. I talk about them so much that my fans call themselves Sam’s sprouts.

EVER DIETED?

Not really. I’m 5ft 6in and am happy with my weight, though I wouldn’t ever tell anyone what I weigh.

The only time I’ve ever really had to go on a diet was when I filmed Les Mis and had to look like a waif. I worked with a personal trainer every day so I lost weight steadily.

ANY VICES?

Peanut butter. On everything: desserts, toast, a spoon, you name it. Salt is another vice, and people look at me strangely when I add it to chocolate dessert, but I love that sweet-salt combination.

I also might have a vodka and Diet Coke or two at the end of the week.

ANY FAMILY AILMENTS?

No. My grandpa, in particular, is so fit that he puts me to shame.

POP ANY PILLS?

I take cod liver oil and Floradix (a liquid iron formula) when I think I’m not getting enough iron in my diet.

HAD ANYTHING REMOVED?

No, but when my milk teeth fell out when I was a little girl I was terrified I’d always have a gap in my mouth.

COPE WELL WITH PAIN?

I’ve got a high pain threshold — if you’re in a West End show and you get an ache or a cold, you just have to get on with it.

TRIED ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE?

A lot of singers in musicals swear by pei pa koa, a traditional Chinese herbal remedy sold in Chinatown in London.

You put a couple of spoonfuls in a cup of hot water. I drank it when I had a horrible cough and it really soothed my throat.

EVER BEEN DEPRESSED?

No, though I can suffer from stress. It’s a horrible thing and can creep up on you. When I have one of those days, I take a bit of time out and unwind by watching my favourite series, Friends, going on PlayStation or just chilling with friends.

HANGOVER CURE?

If I’m going out for a few drinks, I always drink a lot of coconut water after I get home to stop myself from dehydrating.

BIGGEST PHOBIA?

Mice — I hate them and they terrify me. I can’t be rational about them.

WHAT KEEPS YOU AWAKE?

As soon as my head hits the pillow that’s me gone. I’m more of a morning worrier.

LIKE TO LIVE FOREVER?

I like the idea, because I really enjoy life. I just hope I can cram in all the things I want to do before my time is up.
