Beauty brand L’Oréal has launched an electronic patch, designed to measure the wearer’s exposure to UV in Australia.

The My UV Patch is designed to be worn for five days and its aim is to educate the wearer about their sun behaviour when used in conjunction with an app, according to the company.

The patch is approximately the size of a 50 cent coin and half the thickness of an average strand of hair.

The company said it is designed so that wearers can sleep, exercise, shower or swim with the patch, while applying their sun protection over it to measure their UV exposure in real time.

The ‘first-of-its-kind’ technologically-connected patch works through the use of photosensitive dyes, which change colour when exposed to UV radiation.

Users scan their patch using the app on their phone to determine their daily exposure to UV, while the app also takes into account a wearer’s hair and eye colour, UV sensitivity, GPS location and ozone concentration.

Safe: Whenever UV levels top three, experts say it is important to wear sun protection and adapt your sun behaviour accordingly

Caveat: Whilst the patches are available free from ‘participating dermatologists’ L’Oréal says they are a ‘gift with purchase’ of their La Roche-Posay sunscreen products

Australia has the highest incidence of skin cancer worldwide, and melanoma – the deadliest form – is projected to be the fourth most common cancer in Australia this year.

But if you are keen to give the innovative new gadget a go, there is something you should know.

Whilst the patches are available free from ‘participating dermatologists’, L’Oréal says they are a ‘gift with purchase’ of their La Roche-Posay sunscreen products.

According to the CEO of the Cancer Council, Sanchia Aranda, it is ‘absolutely critical’ that people understand UV levels, and plan their sun behaviour accordingly.

However, she adds that: ‘You can figure out UV levels these days via the weather forecast or the Sunsmart app‘.

‘When the UV levels are above three, you need to be wearing sun protection,’ Ms Aranda told Daily Mail Australia.

Imperative: According to the CEO of the Cancer Council, Sanchia Aranda, it is ‘absolutely critical’ that people understand UV levels, and plan their sun behaviour accordingly

Cottoning on: Ms Aranda believes that Australia is slowly becoming more sun smart – ‘We have to be as our summers are so long,’ she said

She said that whenever the UV tips over three, she is in the habit of wearing a different moisturiser on her face, in order to be safe.

‘As a whole, Australia is getting more sun smart,’ she said.

‘We have to be as our summers are so long. But I think it’s great that sun-safe technology is getting better and better.

‘I like seeing things like apps which show you shady places on the beach and things.

‘Remember: You only need 30 minutes of direct sunlight a day – just on your forearms for instance – to get your vitamin D.

‘It’s possibly to live an outdoors-y life and be sun smart.’

The My UV Patch is available at 800 participating pharmacies around Australia and from selected dermatologists.

It comes free when you purchase a La Roche-Posay suncream.
