A surgeon at renowned hospital Mount Sinai Medical Center has been relieved from his clinical and administrative duties after removing the wrong kidney from a patient suffering from kidney disease.

Hospital spokeswoman Dorie Klissas said Thursday the event should never have occurred.

Klissas says the wrong kidney was removed from a 76-year-old patient who was on dialysis with two failed and diseased kidneys. She says the second failed kidney was subsequently removed and the patient is doing well.

Klissas added the surgeon had treated the patient for bladder cancer in the past and that despite the error, the patients has “enormous faith in the doctor.”

The hospital has apologized to the patient.
