Olivia Wilde Had Some THINGS to Say About Her First Marriage

Olivia Wilde may have just become a new mom this year, but she’s found a way to balance motherhood and work at the same time. Her latest project is an untitled HBO show created by Martin Scorcese and Mick Jagger (yes, that Mick Jagger), and she’s also landed the cover of Glamour‘s September issue. In her revealing interview, she shares that she has gone through a lot in the past year, from becoming a mom to baby Otis, getting engaged to fiancé Jason Sudeikis, to revamping her on-screen image. She also opens up about her past relationship with ex-husband, Italian filmmaker, Tao Ruspoli.

Olivia, who turned 30 last year, says that she went through some major changes when she celebrated the big 3-0. She called it her “cut the bull—- and go be awesome” stage (don’t you just love that?). She gives her ex, whom she was married to for eight years, credit in her transformation. “[I] wouldn’t be this person without that first marriage,” she explains. “I really grew up with my first husband. Now I’m in a much wiser, more centered place in life.” Olivia joins the ranks of Kaley Cuoco and Gwyneth Paltrow who are also friendly with their exes and share no hard feelings.

Olivia doesn’t believe that every breakup needs to be messy and instead says we should do what we can to take the good from it. “I think if we can see people in our lives as chapters, we have a much healthier perspective about the whole thing. It’s like it had to happen the way it happened,” she told the magazine. This is a healthy way to look at things—especially if you’re going through your own breakup now.

Olivia’s point of view is refreshing because it’s a reminder that holding on to resentment and anger keeps you from growing into your best self. It’s important that you use those mistakes from the past to learn from them, channeling that energy in a more positive way. By accepting that these experiences helped you bloom into the person you are today, you can move forward in a positive, healthy way.
