Our medical science is in rude health

The story is a reminder that Britain is a world leader when it comes to
science. It was Britons who first postulated the theory of evolution,
invented the steam engine, discovered penicillin, designed the first turbo
jet engine and created the world wide web. Last year, Professor Harminder
Dua, of Nottingham University, found a new part of the human body hidden
deep in the eye, the discovery of which could beat glaucoma. And a landmark
British study raised hopes for the invention of a simple pill to combat
Alzheimer’s. Meanwhile, the space industry is estimated to be worth £9.1
billion to the economy and to employ some 30,000 people. There are plans to
build a launch site at Lossiemouth, the RAF base near Aberdeen, which could
see Virgin Galactic send tourists into space from Scotland.
