Resident couples collectively celebrate 380 years of marriage


Six couples, each married more than 50 years, celebrated their love and dedication to each other during a recent anniversary party at Humility House in Austintown.

The couples are all residents of Humility House, which provides assisted living, skilled nursing and special care.

Betty and Mike DePerro celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary. They were married on the Fourth of July in 1941 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Niles. The secret of their long marriage, Mike DePerro said, is “cooperation and always being willing to give and take.”

Betty and Don Ebaugh celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. They were married June 15, 1946 in Youngstown. Their secret to a long and happy marriage: Love Jesus and love each other. With God’s help, they say, they were able to get through any troubles they encountered.

Peggy Jo and Buck Kornick were married June 11, 1950 and celebrated their 64th anniversary. They claim they’ve never had an argument.

Dorothea and Tom Fizet celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. They were married in Youngstown Nov. 18, 1950 and this month plan to move to Washington to be near their children.

Betty and Harry Storey, married 61 years, report that perseverance and devotion guided their marriage.

Pat and John Bermann, married 51 years, credit commitment to one another and their wedding vows, for their long marriage. “And besides,” John Bermann added, “I never leave a job unfinished.”

A brief ceremony that included the reading of scripture and a blessing was followed by a champagne toast, wedding cake and a sing along of love songs as the couples celebrated with family, friends and residents.
