These are the dramatic pictures that show how a prosthetic ear dramatically changed the appearance of a man who had spent his whole life feeling ‘incomplete’.

Charlie, a Scottish musician now living in LA, was born without a left ear which never developed as a result of Goldenhar syndrome.

Despite being a successful musician and having his own band, Charlie could only hear out of his right ear and said he felt ‘incomplete’ without a second one.

With Charlie’s appearance taking its toll on his self-esteem, he sought the help of plastic surgeons Terry Dubrow and Paul Nassif on last night’s episode of Botched by Nature.

Following his consultation, Charlie chose a prosthetic option instead of having a surgical procedure in order to leave both ears symmetrical.

In order to build the ear, doctors brought in prosthetic specialist Robert Barron, who used to work for the CIA.

To create the prosthetic ear, Robert made a mold of Charlie’s right ear, and one of a part of his ear that did develop on the left side, using liquid silicone.

‘For Charlie’s ear molding today we’ll use liquid silicone to coat both sides of Charlie’s head, making an impression on both his good right ear and his left side where his ear is missing,’ Dr Nassif explained.

‘After the silicone is done drying, we’ll have perfect impressions from which to devise Charlie a mirror image of his right ear to wear on the left side of his head.’

WHAT IS GOLDENHAR SYNDROME?

Goldenhar syndrome is a rare congenital condition characterized by incomplete development of the ear, nose, soft palate, lip, and lower jaw, usually on one side of the body.

Some patients also have underdeveloped organs, particularly the heart, kidneys and lungs. They can be affected by scoliosis, hearing loss, and sometimes blindness.

This would give Charlie the symmetrical appearance he’d always wanted.

Using medical adhesive, Robert then placed the prosthetic ear onto Charlie’s head. When Charlie saw the prosthetic ear on for the first time he said it was ‘insane’.

‘Seeing myself with two ears for the first time is incredible,’ Charlie confessed.

‘I feel like I’m looking at something completely new, this is definitely better than I expected. It’s more than I could’ve hoped for.’

Charlie said he can now pursue his music career without ‘worrying’ about his appearance.
