A teacher who nearly died when he fell cracked his skull open playing football has made a ‘miraculous’ recovery.

Sean Dolan, from Billingham, Teeside, almost died in 2013 when he fell and hit his head on a wall during a game of five-a-side.

The 27-year-old spent five days in a coma with a fractured skull and bleed on the brain.

He was in intensive care for weeks and had half his skull removed, but after occupational and physiotherapy and went on to make an amazing recovery.

Mr Dolan fell on a wall and cracked his skull open while playing football in 2013. He spent five days in a coma with a bleed on his brain, losing a chunk of his skull (left). But he made an amazing recovery (right) and has been fundraising for the hospital that saved him ever since

As soon as he was well enough he began fundraising for the hospital, and hopes to hit the £10,000 mark on the three-year-anniversary of his accident.

Mr Dolan, a teacher, is set to take part in the Great North Run in September, after already raising £8,000 for James Cook University Hospital.

Mr Dolan is running a half marathon in September, by which time he hopes to hit the £10,000 fundraising mark

Less than a year after the trauma, he completed an Olympic-sized triathlon then went on to host a 24-hour football match at SRC Bede Sixth Form – in the same hall where the accident happened.

He is now gearing up to complete the half marathon on September 11.

‘I’ve done a lot of fundraising in the past, but I wanted to give it one last push and hopefully get my total to £10,000,’ said Mr Dolan, who works at North Ormesby Primary Academy, Middlesbrough.

‘I will be forever thankful to all of the staff at James Cook so my efforts are just a fraction of what I owe them, in my opinion.’

A spokeswoman for South Tees Hospitals Charity said: ‘Sean has raised such a fantastic amount which has been donated to our neurosciences fund to help enhance patient care at The James Cook University Hospital.

‘Donations like this help us provide the extras over and above what the NHS provides and we really appreciate all his efforts.
