WHAT TO DO 

If you have thicker ankles – or ‘cankles’ – work on toning your lower leg muscles to create a nicer line from your calf all the way down to your foot, says Nadya Fairweather, founder of u-shape.co.uk.

Start by standing on a low step or sturdy book and allow your heels to hang off the edge slightly.

You can hold on to a wall or bannister for balance if you are feeling wobbly.

If you have thicker ankles – or ‘cankles’ – work on toning your lower leg muscles to create a nicer line from your calf all the way down to your foot

Then, slowly dip your heels down below the step and steadily rise up onto your tip toes until you feel your calf muscles ‘burning’.

Try to do three sets with a break and a walk between each.

If you want to make it harder, try balancing on one foot. This will engage your core muscles, too, as they will work harder to keep you upright and balanced.

WHAT TO EAT 

One of the reasons our ankles can seem swollen and chunky is fluid retention.

Complement your exercise by avoiding sodium and increasing the amount of protein in your diet, advises Fresh Fitness Food nutritionist Emma Rose.

Serve up a healthy portion of salmon or red meat for supper to increase protein intake – a lack of protein can cause fluid swelling

Avoid processed foods, as these contain high levels of sodium, which can cause fluid retention.

If you don’t eat meat, legumes and nuts are protein-rich options. Snack on bananas, too, which are rich in potassium – this will work to reduce sodium levels.
