- Five nominees for Webby Awards’ Health and Fitness category
- Include a pregnancy, fundraising and fitness ‘motivator’ app
- Also nominated is a fitness app and a pocket pharmacist app
The top five Health and Fitness apps fighting for the crown at the 2014 Webby Awards next week have been revealed.
The nominees include a reproductive health service, an exercise encouragement app and an effort helping athletes raise funds for charity.
This is the first year health and fitness apps were given their own category, and as well as the five nominees, 11 ‘honouree’ apps were chosen, which includes a blood sugar tracker for diabetics and a First Aid app.
On to a winner: App Charity Miles sees runners and bikers raise funds for charity by ‘earning’ between 10-25 cents per mile from a pool of corporate donations
‘There is a lot of promise for health and fitness apps, and I think we are really just at the beginning of what we will see and how important some of these experiences will become in our daily lives,’ David-Michel Davies, executive director of the awards, said in a statement.
CHARITY MILES
A
free exercise app where anyone can earn money for charity though
exercise. The app’s developer has acquired sponsors, all the user has to
do is download the app, share their activity on social media, and the
corporate sponsors donate 10cents for each mile biked and 25 cents for
each mile run.
Once the
initial $1million has been earned by charity athletes, the app’s
developer hopes other corporate sponsors will be enticed by the exposure
and good cause.
There are
nine charities to choose from, including Achilles International, Autism
Speaks, Feeding America and Habitat for Humanity.
Nike Win the Hour Webby Awards
WIN THE HOUR
An
encouragement app from Nike, which sees the user ‘win’ an hour if they
move for five minutes straight out of every 60 minutes.
Set up to combat sedentary lifestyles, it ‘awards’ the user with each hour ‘won’.
It also features mini-challenges, trophies, and social motivation, based on performance science.
TOUCHFIT GSP
An exercise app from Zolmo with MMA fighter Georges St-Pierre, his own gymnastics trainer and nutrition coach.
It
features more than 500 video exercises based on gymnastics and HIIT,
fitness and recovery tracker, personal scores and challenges.
Walgreens Mobile App helps customers track their prescriptions
WALGREENS
A customer service app for U.S. supermarket Walgreens pharmacy customers.
It
offers online chats with pharmacists, refilling or transferring
prescriptions by scanning your medication container, and remainders of
when to take your drugs or supplements.
GLOW
Glow offers ‘full control of your reproductive health’ including reminders of ovulation and ways to boost your chances of getting pregnant.
The app also allows users to sign up for Glow First, a scheme to help provide fertility treatment through crowd-funding.
Each person or couple who sign up for Glow First contributes to the fund each month. After ten months the fund is split between those couples those who are not yet pregnant. If you do get pregnant within the ten months, the money is donated to those ‘less fortunate’.
The winners of the 2014 Webby Awards will be announced next week, honouring the best apps and digital innovations in several categories
Established in 1996, the Webby Awards are presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, an organization made up of more than 1,000 technology experts and artists.
The Webby Awards’ mobile and apps section showcase an average of ten applications for handheld devices and tablets in each category, including Music, News, Shopping and Education.
The winners will be announced on April 29. The Webbys are presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a group of about 1,000 Internet experts and professionals. Webby categories are split into a regular award, chosen by the academy, and a ‘people’s voice’ award, which lets members of the public vote.
Among the mobile apps and games nominated are the secret-sharing app Whisper, vacation rental site Airbnb and QuizUp and PulsePoint, an app that lets people trained in CPR help people nearby who are in need of assistance.
This year’s awards received more than 12,000 entries from over 60 countries. Of these, 8 percent were selected as nominees.

I’m using My Fitness Pal and Endomondo, they transfer info to each other so my exercise links from Endomondo to Fitness Pal without me having to input it.
