The first AREDS study found that an antioxidant supplement of beta carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E and zinc appeared to reduce the risk of age-related macular changes. AREDS2, its follow-up study, revealed that plant-based antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin could be substituted for beta-carotene, which is associated with health risks in smokers and absorption challenges in others.
