Here’s what went down: Danielle was working out at the gym with her shirt off, which she says usually makes her feel good. But another woman walked in with her shirt off, which made Danielle start to feel self-conscious. She felt so unsure of herself that she debated whether or not she should put her shirt back on…before she realized she was only having this internal struggle because she was comparing herself to this woman. Basically, nothing had changed—she just felt like she suddenly didn’t stack up.

“I’m like, ‘Why just two minutes ago I was feeling great and now I’m not?’” she said in the video. “And I realized the reason I was feeling so great is because I was comparing myself to yesterday’s Danielle. And today’s Danielle is better than yesterday’s. And that’s why I felt so good.”

Keep that message on the backburner next time you’re working out next to a woman who looks like she could medal in the elliptical Olympics. You’re stronger today than you were yesterday, and you’ll be even better tomorrow—and that’s pretty empowering.
