Why Aldi urgently recalled processed meats ?

Aldi has recalled two variants of its processed meats over fears that they contain milk, which is not stated on the products.

The supermarket chains Deli Salami Selection and Deli Continental Selection with an expiration date of September 25 have both been affected.

Aldi said the product is being recalled as a precaution after the supplier noticed the product was contaminated.

Officials at the Food Standards Agency (FSA), which published the warning, warn that the product poses a “potential health risk to anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk.”

Milk allergy and lactose intolerance: the facts

People who cannot consume milk are allergic to the proteins in cow’s milk or are unable to digest the sugar in the product, known as lactose intolerance.

Milk allergy symptoms can range from just a rash and itching to vomiting, stomach cramps, and diarrhea. It can occur within minutes of eating or drinking products containing dairy.

In severe cases, it can cause anaphylaxis – a serious, life-threatening reaction in which swelling in the throat can block the airways.

About three in a hundred babies have a cow’s milk allergy, but most outgrow it during childhood.

Older children and adults who are allergic to cow’s milk tend to have a more severe allergy.

Many products on supermarket shelves that are not typical dairy products still contain milk, such as cereals, breads, cookies, crackers, sauces and cakes.

Only these batches have been recalled.

Customers are urged not to eat the meat packs, which contain a mix of salami and cured ham, if they have an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk ingredients.

Instead, those who purchased the packs can return them to their nearest retailer for a full refund.

Aldi has also sent its customers a sales notice explaining why the products are being recalled and what to do once they have purchased the products.

The FSA conducts food recalls – asking customers to return a product – when problems are noticed with food that means it shouldn’t be sold.
